The Cappella Romana, a highly respected American Choir specializing in Byzantine sacred music, will travel to Paros for performances at The Ekatontapyliani on 5 September and the Church of Zoodochos Pigis in Aspro Chorio on 6 September. Both performances will be at 8:30 in the evening and are open to all interested people.
Founding Artistic Director Alexander Lingas will direct a 10-member ensemble in the program "The Byzantine Tradition: From Constantinople to California", performing the important historical music of the Byzantine tradition as well as contemporary sacred music of the Greek Orthodox in America, both of which are largely unknown in Greece except among specialists.
Cappella Romana tours the United States regularly and made its European début in March 2004 at the Byzantine Festival in London with concerts at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, St. Paul’s Cathedral, and the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of St. Sophia.
Doctor Alexander Lingas, Cappella Romana's founder and artistic director, is currently a Lecturer in Music at City University in London and a Fellow of the University of Oxford's European Humanities Research Centre. He was formerly Assistant Professor of Music History at Arizona State University's School of Music and has also served as a lecturer and advisor for the Institute of Orthodox Christian Studies at the University of Cambridge.
