Aegean Jazz Project - Vassilis Rakopoulos quintet

A particularly atmospheric concert based on Aegean musical characteristics and cadences, within the context of contemporary jazz trends. It is an experimental, improvisational composition which falls within the international movement of 'Intuitive Music'. The idea of the Aegean Jazz project was developed in the aftermath of concerts by Marcus Stockhausen and Vasilis Rakopoulos within the context of performances and workshops organized by the Goethe Institute and the University of Macedonia.

It is not only that the original compositions are characterized by the austerity of the Cycladic idiom, but also the way of approaching and interpreting, searching for a sound which echoes the clarity of the light of the Cycladic islands.

The musicians get together at a unique level of experimental ethos and spirit, acting in an “intuitive” musical & poetical manner, setting the musical dialog on a level of high alertness and emotional content.

The first live recording of the ensemble was made of the performance on June 1st 2017 and produced by the MIET (Cultural Foundation of the National Bank of Greece) in December 2017.

In 2020, the Aegean Jazz project is enriched by the participation of the trumpet of Andreas Polyzogopoulos and a superb rhythm section of  accomplished musicians, Marc Buronfosse on the bass and Thanos

Μια ιδιαίτερα ατμοσφαιρική συναυλία βασισμένη σε αιγαιοπελαγίτικα μουσικά χαρακτηριστικά και αναπτύξεις ενταγμένες στα σύγχρονα μουσικά ρεύματα της Jazz.   

Πρόκειται για ένα εγχείρημα πειραματικού ήθους που διατηρεί συγγένεια με αυτό που διεθνώς περιγράφεται με τον όρο “ intuitive music. Η ιδέα του Aegean Jazz project γεννήθηκε τον Νοέμβριο του 2010 στον απόηχο των συναυλιών του Markus Stockhausen και του Βασίλη Ρακόπουλου στο πλαίσιο των εκδηλώσεων του Ινστιτούτου Goethe και του Πανεπιστημίου Μακεδονίας.

Το 2017 το Aegean Jazz project παρουσιάστηκε με ένα κουαρτέτο γνωστών και καταξιωμένων μουσικών που πλαισίωσαν τον Β. Ρακόπουλο. H πρώτη ζωντανή ηχογράφηση του σχήματος από την συναυλία της 1^ης Ιουνίου 2017 εκδόθηκε σε CD από το Μορφωτικό Ίδρυμα Εθνικής Τραπέζης.

To 2020 το Aegean Jazz project εμπλουτίζεται με τη συμμετοχή του χαρισματικού τρομπετίστα Αντρέα Πολυζωγόπουλου, του πιανίστα Στάθη Άννινου και ενός δυναμικού και ευέλικτου Rhythm section των Marc Buronfosse στο μπάσο και του Θάνου Χατζηαναγνώστου στα τύμπανα.

Δεν είναι μόνο οι πρωτότυπες συνθέσεις που απεικονίζουν και προβάλουν τη λιτότητα του κυκλαδικού ιδιώματος, αλλά και ο τρόπος προσέγγισης και ερμηνείας που αναζητά έναν ήχο ανάτασης, έναν ήχο αντίστοιχο με το φως των Κυκλάδων.
