As half-Greek but living in England, it’s always been my dream to live in Greece and properly engage with my heritage. So this residency at the Apothiki is a very
significant first step for me in doing that. Having projected positive ideas and hopes onto Greece all my life, I’m asking, to what extent does the reality
match up to my projection? Can I ever get beyond the stereotype of the Greece I have in my mind?
In this series of work, I’m looking to absorb my Greek surroundings whilst remaining focused on my main artistic interest-depicting the human face. The
endless variation of the human face is a constant source of curiosity and inspiration for me.
I look to capture the subtle beauty I see in faces in my work.
Simultaneously, I enjoy the aesthetic effect of juxtaposing flat, bold patterns against the
face, hence my use of stencils.
As inspiration for this work, I’ve spent time drawing in the Paros Archaeological Museum where I’ve taken particular interest in their collection of votive
clay heads along with patterns found on their pottery.
